Back down from up over... 01/12/2012

I have just returned from a long range planning meeting in Seattle for the Glass Art Society Board of Directors. It was a quick and thick meeting. I will be writing more about the meeting for the next GASNews edition, so check it out!

While I was gone, a couple nice events have happened.

Firstly, a show conceived and curated by Aimee Sones and Jessica Larva called the Tracing Lines was launched at The Ohio State University Urban Arts Space in Columbus, Ohio, in January 2012. You can read about it here. You can see installation shots here. I only have one work from my Bridge Series in the show. Here is an image of it installed:

I also received a copy of a publication from the Art Gallery of Western Australia that is called Translucence: contemporary glass that details some glass work that they have added to their collection that they have built into a show celebrating 10 years of the Tom Malone Prize. Here is a look at the cover, a mention about my work, the image of the work they have and a flyer about the event:

It seems that SOFA Chicago has come and gone. I hear that many friends did well this year and that is always excellent and hopeful to hear. Unfortunately, I could not make it to the show, but I saw this great little update by Andew Page about the event. Luckily enough, his post mentioned my work that was shown by Beaver Galleries! Check it out here.

I have just returned from my photographer, Rob Little, with some images of an available piece I made called "Reach" from the Crate Series. This piece is about the desire to request and receive a small step up.

Check it out:

And the winner is.... 06/26/2011

...Clare Belfrage!

Clare was the winner of the 2011 Tom Malone Prize held and awarded by The Art Gallery of Western Australia. I was lucky enough to be included in a small handful of finalists for this prize. This award is like nothing I have ever been a part of. The three judges travel all across Australia to meet one on...well...three, to talk directly with each artist and witness the works in person. I have great respect for this process and I think if you look at the list of finalists each year for this prize, I think you will see their effort yields the best results. For me, I was surprised and excited just to come close to the finish line for this honor.

To end on a super sweet note, it seems that The Gallery of Western Australia has decided to purchase the piece I had entered into the competition! I couldn't be happier. Here is the work:

Glass Art Society conference(s)... 06/25/2011

I have just returned to Australia from the fantastic 41st Annual GAS Conference that was held in Seattle, Washington. I saw many great friends and presentations as well as worked until I dropped. Here are two short video interviews done by Andrew Page ( of UrbanGlass's Glass Quarterly fame) of me during the weekend (the start up images are flattering-I know):
If you missed the event in Seattle, I am sorry because it was truly spectacular. However, as luck would have it, we are busily working on the next conference that will be held in Toledo, Ohio next June. Besides Toledo being my home town, it was also the site of the 1962 workshops that started the whole studio glass movement in the United States. To give you a peek at the awesomeness that will ensue, please check this out:

Acquired and arrived! 06/25/2011

I have just recently had a piece of mine acquired by the ACT Legislative Assembly here in Canberra for their collection!

The piece is called "Drawn Across"  and it is a work from the Slider Series. This piece depicts my transition to Canberra from Portland.

This is an exciting event for me for many reasons, but most of all it gives me a sense of arrival and acceptance.

I had some excellent news today and found out that Craft Arts has used my image on the cover of their latest issue. This is a first for me and very exciting. There is a fantastic article written about my work by Dr. Sharon Peoples inside the magazine. Check it out:
