]]><![CDATA[Work in the works...]]>Fri, 20 Apr 2012 15:42:24 -0800http://www.jeremylepisto.com/1/post/2012/04/work-in-the-works.htmlPursuant to my PhD thesis, I am currently working to get some sketches off the page and into form.

I am working in a couple different directions to stagger the stops and starts of making and to circumvent ideas of transfer.

One of the directions is in pursuit of creating little glass barrels (9"h x 6"dia). Each barrel can reveal the level of their interior contents. These works are allowing me to work on the the concepts of what is needed, supplied and used. Here are some images:
As well as the Barrels, I am working on some Containers. the Containers are moving in two different directions, but each look to address the ability to affect and connect the destination and origins that they service.

The first direction is making these forms out of glass. I am working towards making hollow transparent glass container forms to hold/provide constructed scenes of their origin/destination. I have currently finalized the making of the glass exteriors. Here are process shots of these works thus far:
The second direction is to create larger steel containers to stack, stand on end and illustrate upon to explore the concept of their relationship to the health and development of the places they service and float between. Here is the developments so far:

]]><![CDATA[Back down from up over...]]>Thu, 12 Jan 2012 18:29:09 -0800http://www.jeremylepisto.com/1/post/2012/01/back-down-from-up-over.htmlI have just returned from a long range planning meeting in Seattle for the Glass Art Society Board of Directors. It was a quick and thick meeting. I will be writing more about the meeting for the next GASNews edition, so check it out!

While I was gone, a couple nice events have happened.

Firstly, a show conceived and curated by Aimee Sones and Jessica Larva called the Tracing Lines was launched at The Ohio State University Urban Arts Space in Columbus, Ohio, in January 2012. You can read about it here. You can see installation shots here. I only have one work from my Bridge Series in the show. Here is an image of it installed:

I also received a copy of a publication from the Art Gallery of Western Australia that is called Translucence: contemporary glass that details some glass work that they have added to their collection that they have built into a show celebrating 10 years of the Tom Malone Prize. Clare was the winner of the 2011 Tom Malone Prize held and awarded by The Art Gallery of Western Australia. I was lucky enough to be included in a small handful of finalists for this prize. This award is like nothing I have ever been a part of. The three judges travel all across Australia to meet one on...well...three, to talk directly with each artist and witness the works in person. I have great respect for this process and I think if you look at the list of finalists each year for this prize, I think you will see their effort yields the best results. For me, I was surprised and excited just to come close to the finish line for this honor.

To end on a super sweet note, it seems that The Gallery of Western Australia has decided to purchase the piece I had entered into the competition! I couldn't be happier. Here is the work:

]]><![CDATA[Glass Art Society conference(s)...]]>Sat, 25 Jun 2011 18:45:39 -0800http://www.jeremylepisto.com/1/post/2011/06/glass-art-society-conferences.htmlI have just returned to Australia from the fantastic 41st Annual GAS Conference that was held in Seattle, Washington. I saw many great friends and presentations as well as worked until I dropped. Here are two short video interviews done by Andrew Page ( of UrbanGlass's Glass Quarterly fame) of me during the weekend (the start up images are flattering-I know):
If you missed the event in Seattle, I am sorry because it was truly spectacular. However, as luck would have it, we are busily working on the next conference that will be held in Toledo, Ohio next June. Besides Toledo being my home town, it was also the site of the 1962 workshops that started the whole studio glass movement in the United States.
